METEOROLOGICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL INFO:

In the heart of Norway, amid the breathtaking and famous mountain areas Jotunheimen and Rondane, lies the small town of Vågå. This area, known for being the part of Norway with least rainfall during summer, was many years ago selected for the establishment of the Norwegian Hang and Paragliding Centre. After decades with annually the longest XC flights flown, Vågå is now known as the Paragliding-Mekka of Norway.

The flying area around the main takeoff locations consists of high but smooth mountains and plateau. Valleys are mainly wide and open, with good landing possibilities both down in the valleys and in the mountains.

Towards the east one can fly into young Rondane, with sharp peaks up to 2178 m. Towards the west one meets older Jotunheimen, with Norway's highest mountain Galdhøpiggen, 2469 m. One of the takeoffs we will use on northerly winds are situated just below Galdhøpiggen, and because of the meteorological conditions the area gives we can fly in the lee of strong winds from the north, with smooth and nice thermals in the afternoon.

Southwards the terrain slowly lowers towards Lillehammer, with more hilly-like landscape. Finally northwards, one flies into high but fairly flat Dovrefjell.

Several alternative takeoff locations, within 1.5 hours of driving, are available for different wind directions or altitudes, and with different weather systems. All main takeoffs we will use have space for many pilots taking off at the same time.

The national weblog shows highest activity in July for the sites around Vågå, with the takeoff Vole being the most used location nationally.

Good days result in cloud base above 3000 m, exceptional days sometimes above 4000 m. Thermal activity can be just as strong as you find in central Europe.

Vågå has been the natural takeoff for the longest XC flights and triangle flights in Norway, and has up to this date yearly been the site for the National hangglider competitions since the sport was invented.

If you want to know more about flying in Vågå and the sorrounding area check out this webpage.
